Oncology Massage
Oncology massage is an emerging field that safely adapts massage and bodywork to the needs of people living with cancer.
Until relatively recently, massage was contraindicated for cancer patients. However, research has shown that massage therapy as an adjunct to traditional cancer treatments has many benefits:
- Reduces pain, fatigue, depression and anxiety
- Lowers blood pressure
- Reduces nausea
- Improves sleep and feeling of well being
- Improves immune system functioning
- Brings focused, nurturing touch to people who have undergone painful, invasive medical treatments
I combine gentle massage, lymphatic techniques, reflexology and acupressure to create sessions based on a person’s individual needs at any stage of treatment or post-treatment.
I have advanced training to help with complications from cancer surgery, such as scar tissue, fibrosis, cording, and post operative swelling and pain.
It is important for people with or at-risk for lymphedema find a massage therapist who is certified in MLD or trained in oncology massage who can appropriately modify massage techniques to prevent triggering or worsening lymphedema.
